Dan Denton

Dan grew up in the Catskill Mountains in Woodstock, NY and now resides and works in Portsmouth, RI. He is a self-taught artist who studied architecture at New York Institute of Technology and Boston Architectural Center. Dan has worked as a carpenter, draftsperson, architectural designer, stone fabricator and ultimately, artist. He maintained his own stone fabrication business for twelve or so years where his shop produced and installed interior residential stone work from NY to Boston. In 2000 he began making artwork in earnest choosing at first to focus mostly on furniture, blending stone, wood and metal into functional art. Dan eventually moved away from furniture making and into the discipline of sculpture as most of his current work is much less about function and much more about concept. As a self described, "materialist with minimalist tendencies" Dan's concentration has become art making within the theme of the interplay of essence and abstraction. He still works primarily in stone but has an ever expanding quiver of other materials including batt insulation. In his latest work he is using photography to explore space and color and material relationships in two and three dimensions. Dan has exhibited in Providence, RI, Boston, MA and Philadelphia, PA. He has had his work in juried shows at the Newport Art Museum in Newport, RI and has done many gallery shows in the Newport area. Dan's work is in private collections in Los Angeles, CA, New York, NY, New Haven, CT, Miami, FL, Barrington, RI, Jamestown, RI and Newport, RI.
